Cross-Border Rental Rules

5 min readLast updated: 16/08/2026

You can drive a Klass Wagen rental across a border only with written permission issued at pickup and after paying the cross-border fee. The countries you may enter, the daily fee, and the maximum charge depend on where you collect the car — the rules below are organized by pickup country: Romania, Hungary, Portugal, and Austria.

Where you can drive (by pickup country)

Cross-border travel is permitted only into the countries listed for your pickup location, and only after Klass Wagen issues written authorization. Entering any country not on your list voids your insurance and protection coverage and triggers the penalties described under Fees & notice period.

Romania

  • Allowed countries: Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, North Macedonia.
  • Not allowed / exceptions: Any country not listed above is prohibited.
  • Notes: For travel to North Macedonia, a Green Card must be purchased at the border to cover the car's insurance (a fee of €50 must be paid at entry for the Green Card); this Green Card is mandatory only for that country.

Hungary

  • Allowed countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Greece, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Poland, Montenegro, North Macedonia (FYROM), Slovenia.
  • Not allowed / exceptions: Any country not listed above is prohibited. Using a ferry is not allowed.
  • Notes: Cross-border fees are charged on a sliding daily scale by rental duration (see Fees).

Portugal

  • Allowed countries: Spain (mainland only).
  • Not allowed / exceptions: Travel to any other country is prohibited. The vehicle may not be taken by ferry to the islands of Madeira or the Azores from the Portuguese mainland, as this is not covered by insurance.
  • Notes: Cross-border travel must be confirmed with the rental agent at pickup; the company issues a written empowerment to travel in the permitted country.

Austria

  • Allowed countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland.
  • Not allowed / exceptions: Any country not listed above is prohibited.
  • Notes: Cross-border fees are charged on a sliding daily scale by rental duration (see Fees).

Documents & requirements

For every pickup country, the same core conditions apply before a border crossing can be authorized.

Required at pickup: a valid national driver's license, a valid identity document (passport or ID), and a physical Visa or Mastercard credit card issued in the main driver's name. The card must show the card number and have at least 90 days' validity. Virtual cards and third-party cards are not accepted.

You must also receive and carry the written authorization (empowerment letter) issued by Klass Wagen specifying the countries you may visit. A €100 pre-authorization is placed on the credit card for the cross-border service; it is released at the end of the rental if all terms have been met.

Country-specific document: If you pick up in Romania and travel to North Macedonia, you must buy a Green Card at the border (approximately €50) to cover the car's insurance.

Fees & notice period

The cross-border service fee is charged for the entire rental period, regardless of how many days the car is actually driven outside the country. Road taxes, tolls, and bridge charges abroad are always the customer's responsibility.

Notice period

There is no advance-notice window to submit. Permission is granted in person: cross-border travel must be requested and confirmed with the rental agent at the moment of vehicle collection, when the written authorization is issued and the fee and pre-authorization are applied. Decide on your destinations before pickup so the agent can prepare the empowerment letter.

If you cross without permission

Crossing into a permitted country without prior authorization: You may regularize the situation at return by paying the cross-border service fee from the table above plus a €50 administrative fee. If you refuse to regularize at return, Klass Wagen may charge a fixed fee of €300 to your card.

Driving outside the authorized countries: Even if the cross-border fee was paid, a Restricted Border Breach Fee of €500 applies, the unlimited-mileage condition is revoked, and all kilometers driven are charged at €0.15 per km. Entering a non-permitted country also voids insurance and protection coverage.

How to request permission

  1. Choose your pickup country and intended destination(s). Confirm your route before you travel so it can be authorized in full.
  2. Check eligibility. Make sure each destination appears in the allowed list for your pickup country and that no vehicle-class restriction applies.
  3. State your intention to travel across the border when you arrive at the desk for pickup. Cross-border permission can only be requested at pickup; there is no advance-request process. Tell Klass Wagen your booking number, the main driver's name, the countries you intend to visit, and your travel dates.
  4. Receive approval. The agent issues a written authorization (empowerment letter) naming the permitted countries, applies the cross-border fee, and places the €100 pre-authorization on your card. Keep this authorization with you.
  5. Pick up the car and carry your documents. Travel with your driver's license, ID/passport, the credit card used at pickup, the written authorization, and any country-specific document (such as a Green Card for North Macedonia).

Can I drive from Romania to Serbia?

Yes. Serbia is on the list of permitted countries for rentals picked up in Romania. As with all cross-border travel, you must obtain written authorization at pickup and pay the cross-border fee. Roadside assistance is not included outside Romanian territory.

Can I drive from Romania to Hungary?

Yes. Hungary is a permitted country for rentals collected in Romania. Request authorization at pickup and pay the cross-border fee of €12.40 per rental day (VAT included), maximum €150 per rental.

Can I take a Portugal rental into Spain?

Yes, into mainland Spain only, which is the single permitted destination for rentals picked up in Portugal. Travel to any other country is prohibited, and the car cannot be taken by ferry to Madeira or the Azores. Confirm your cross-border travel with the agent at pickup.

Do I have to pay the cross-border fee for the whole rental?

If you cross into a permitted country without prior authorization, you can regularize it at return by paying the cross-border fee plus a €50 administrative fee, or Klass Wagen may charge a fixed €300 fee. What documents do I need for cross-border travel?

A valid driver's license, a valid ID or passport, and a physical Visa or Mastercard in the main driver's name with at least 90 days' validity. You also carry the written authorization issued by Klass Wagen, and a €100 pre-authorization is placed on your card and released at the end of the rental if all terms are met.
